The Parents’ Home Safety Walk: a room-by-room fall-prevention check for your parents’ home
Ek chakkar lagayein? Aaj shaam.
Papa sounded a little slower getting to the phone. Mummy mentioned, lightly, that she slipped in the bathroom last month and it was nothing. This kit is what to do with that: one evening, a torch and your phone, ten parts of your parents’ home checked the way a physiotherapist would. Tick each room off on the phone as you walk it, with no printout to carry and nothing to remember afterwards, or print the lists if you prefer paper. Most of what you find costs nothing to fix.
माता-पिता के घर को सुरक्षित बनाने की आसान चेकलिस्ट: बाथरूम, सीढ़ियाँ, रोशनी और बहुत कुछ।
Written for homes in India: the measurements work anywhere, but the helplines, prices and the squat-toilet advice are Indian.

Who this helps
Going through a home and removing its hazards cuts the rate of falls by about 38% in older people who are already at higher risk: someone who fell in the past year, was recently in hospital, or needs help with daily tasks. In older people not picked out as higher risk, the same changes made no measurable difference to falls at all. Both findings are high-certainty, from a 2023 Cochrane review of 22 trials and 8,463 people.
So if your parent has had a fall, holds the furniture as they walk, has stiff knees or poor eyesight, or is over 75, this evening is one of the most useful things you can do for them this month. If they are hale and sprightly, read the free pages, change the bulbs, and keep your ₹499 for now.
Ask over tea, before you start
- Has there been a slip or a fall in the last year?
- Do they hold on to furniture or walls indoors?
- Have they stopped doing anything for fear of falling?
Any one yes, and the kit is written for you. All three no, and the free pages are probably enough for now.
Ten rooms, plus two more passes
What you walk through
Each part of the house gets a picture, a tick-box list of what to look for, and three columns of what to do about it: tonight for free, this week under ₹2,000, and this month with a plumber. Every one of those boxes ticks with a tap on your phone, and every note line takes typing, so the walk-through fills itself in as you go and saves into your copy.
Wet floors, the bucket bath, the threshold at the door, and where a hand can reach.
Bed to bathroom in the dark: the one journey worth fixing first.
The rail that stops at the landing, the switch at only one end, the sack of onions on step four.
Bed height, the first thirty seconds after standing, and the stool that keeps coming back.
One twenty-minute rearrangement that retires the stool for good.
The chair test, and why their favourite chair may be making them weaker.
Twice a day somebody makes every floor slippery on purpose. Nobody mentions it.
The cheapest fix in the book, with the Indian standard’s own lux numbers.
A step, an open flame and a sliding mat, handled without hurting anybody.
The doorstep, the broken drain cover, the monsoon.
Washing, the water tank, and the most neglected staircase in the house.
What is on their feet, what trails on the floor, what fills both hands.

A grab bar fitted like a towel rail is no grab bar at all
Plastic wall plugs and a towel-rail height will not hold anyone up. The kit gives you the published figures, drawn to scale: top of the bar 838–914 mm above the floor, at least 1067 mm long, 32–51 mm thick, 38 mm clear of the wall, and strong enough to take 1,112 newtons pulled in any direction. It also gives you the one sentence to say to the plumber, and the reason plastic wall plugs will not do.
Also inside: stair handrail heights, the lux levels India’s own lighting code asks for, and the barefoot-wet slip rating that tile sellers never quote.

The bathroom page, the grab-bar page with every measurement on it, and the card for their fridge, from the kit and lightly shortened to fit. Tick the boxes and fill the card in on your phone, or print it and use a pen. If those 3 pages are useful on their own, they have already done their job.

Questions people ask before buying
My parents are perfectly fine. Should I still buy this?
Maybe not yet. The evidence is clear that going through a home and removing hazards cuts falls by about 38% in older people who are already at higher risk (someone who fell in the past year, was recently in hospital, or needs help with daily tasks), and by nothing measurable in older people not picked out as higher risk. If your parents are sprightly, read the free pages, change the bulbs, and come back when something changes. I would rather say that than sell you a PDF.
My parents live outside India. Will it fit their home?
Partly, and I would rather say so before you buy. The walk itself and the measurements (grab-bar height and strength, lighting levels, stair rails) work in any home. But the helplines, the prices and where to buy things, the Indian building standards and the squat-toilet section are written for India. Read the 3 free pages first and see whether it fits.
They live in another city. Is this any use to me?
That is exactly who it is written for. The kit tells you what to photograph, what to ask, what to fix on your next visit, and how to do the whole walk over a video call if you cannot get there. The printable checklist can be sent to whoever is in the house.
Will they be offended?
Probably, if it is done as an inspection. There is a whole page on how to raise it, with the Hinglish sentences that work and the ones that backfire, because the hardware is the easy half. The short version: make it about you, blame the house and not the person, give them the decisions, and do three things rather than twenty.
Is this medical advice?
No, and it says so on every page. It is a home safety checklist. It cannot tell you why somebody is dizzy or whether their tablets are affecting their balance. There is a page listing exactly what to ask a doctor instead, and the kit makes no claim to prevent or treat any condition.
What are the measurements for?
A grab bar fitted like a towel rail is the same as not fitting one. The kit gives the published numbers (height, length, thickness, wall clearance and the load a bar must take) on a page you can hand straight to a plumber, plus a printable list for the hardware shop with every figure on it.
Do I need a printer, or can I fill it in on my phone?
You do not need a printer: fill it in on your phone, and print only if you want to. It is built to be read on a phone while you walk around the house, and the same file does both jobs. Every sheet you write on (the room checklists, the fix list with its dates, the hardware list, the card for their fridge, even the line for the one thing you’ll do tonight) is a real PDF form field, so you can tap the boxes and type on the lines on your phone or computer and save it, and your answers stay in your copy. Five pages at the back are laid out for printing if you do want paper: the one-sheet walk, the room notes, the fix list, the card for their fridge and the list for the hardware shop. Those work both ways too. Printed, the page looks exactly as it always did: ruled lines and empty boxes for a pen. You can also highlight, underline and add your own notes anywhere in it. The file is not locked in any way, and all the text is real text, not pictures of text. It is saved for fast opening too, so you can read it straight in your browser without waiting for a download. For typing on a phone, use a PDF app that fills forms: Adobe Acrobat Reader is free on Android and iPhone, and Apple’s Files and Books apps work as well. A few very basic viewers, Google Drive’s preview among them, only display the page, which is why the printed layout was left exactly as it was, so it is always a perfect printable as a fallback.
Is the research real, or the usual internet numbers?
Real and cited. 22 sources with links, including Cochrane reviews and India’s own national ageing survey. There is also a page listing the four claims I refused to print because I could not verify them, including “one in three older adults falls every year”, which is a Western figure, not an Indian one.
Can I share it with my brother and sister?
Yes, within your family: print pages, leave them at your parents’ house, show the hardware page to a plumber. Please do not post the file in WhatsApp groups or resell it. The free sample is the file to forward, and I’d love you to.
How do I pay and get the file?
By UPI, card, net banking or wallet, whichever suits you on the payment screen. The download opens straight after payment and a copy is emailed to you. Nothing after 30 minutes? Email littleelsewhere.help@gmail.com with your payment reference (the UTR or order ID).
